PGM Reball manufacture smaller, more compact ballscrews
Florida, USA / Midlands, UK – On Sunday, July 13, 2025, SpaceX successfully launched a telecommunications satellite to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) from Florida’s Space Coast. The satellite included a critical actuation system powered by a miniature high-precision ballscrew manufactured in the Midlands.
The ballscrew, in development since 2020, was designed by Mehdi Sabet and Tomas Moghadam of PGM Reball. Its unique re-circulation mechanism was manufactured with dedicated support from the Precision Manufacturing Centre at the University of Nottingham, a partner that remains a key supplier to the ongoing programme.
Reports from the mission confirm that all actuation mechanisms on the satellite are performing as expected. Telecoms data is now being successfully received from the planned orbit.
This achievement highlights the Midlands’ role at the cutting edge of global space engineering and demonstrates how collaboration between innovative manufacturers and academic partners is enabling advances in space technology.
