Chancellor hails Rolls-Royce as Derby firm funds graduate teachers

The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne at Rolls-Royce yesterday

The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne was at Rolls-Royce yesterday to help launch a partnership that will see the aerospace giant fund dozens of new science teachers.

The company is fuelling charity Teach First with cash to accelerate fast-track teacher training for high-flying graduates to work in disadvantaged areas.

Thanks to the three-year Rolls-Royce deal, Teach First will be able to recruit and train 75 extra science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) teachers.

It is hoped that they will be able to inspire more than 10,000 youngsters across UK secondary and primary schools.

This term, nine new Teach First teachers with qualifications in STEM subjects, have started in classrooms in Derby schools.

A total of 17 Teach First recruits are currently working in the city at schools including Derby Moor Community Sports College, Allenton Community Primary School, Bemrose School, St James’ Church of England Primary School and Da Vinci Community School.

The Chancellor sat in on a lesson at Rolls-Royce’s Learning and Development Centre, in Wilmore Road, and addressed apprentices.

He said: “Rolls-Royce is a great British success story and its decision to partner with Teach First will help develop the next generation of scientists and engineers.
