Over 200 guests from every tier enjoy the MAA black-tie dinner
Aerospace companies gathered at the Grand Hotel in Birmingham for our 7th annual black-tie dinner on 17th October, sponsored by Farsound.
More than 200 guests joined us for the popular event from 82 companies including Rolls-Royce, Parker Meggitt, Moog, ITP Aero and Collins Aerospace as well as manufacturers and specialist service companies from every tier of the industry and many of our stakeholders.
From the moment the doors opened, the event was buzzing with conversation, especially during the Champagne drinks reception - which was sponsored by SJR Partners. Throughout the evening, guests made the most of the opportunity to catch up with industry peers, make new connections, and power up their networks.
The vibrant atmosphere continued into the spectacular ballroom, where the diners were welcomed by MAA Chair of the Board, Alan Dunbar, and Chief Executive, Andrew Mair.
Before being treated to a three-course dinner, guests enjoyed an enlightening speech from Professor Martin Barstow, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Space Park Leicester, University of Leicester, who gave insights from his fascinating career as an astrophysicist and space scientist. He delved into the importance of the UK space sector and the role of Midlands aerospace. Martin was also keen to highlight how all aerospace companies can be part of the space industry and invited people to join him on future missions.
After dinner, Jonathan Medhurst, CPO of Farsound, gave a rousing speech about the great British aerospace industry and the fantastic aircraft we have produced and can produce in future!
A surprise guest then took to the stage. Nigel Owens MBE is the most-capped referee in world rugby and he shared inspirational stories from his life in the sport. He moved the audience when he opened up about his experiences as a young gay man, emphasising the importance of confronting bullying and creating workplaces that are positive, inclusive, and kind.
During the evening, we also said farewell to some industry stalwarts including Peter Knight, Andy Yuill, and Tony Tinley who are retiring. Their wisdom, experience and support will be missed, and we wish them all the best.
Toward the end of the night, thanks to the generosity of guests, our charity raffle raised a record £3,680 for Aerobility, a fantastic charity which provides the disabled community with access to the magic and wonder of flight.
