Airbus delivers first A350

Airbus has delivered the first of its brand new Airbus A350 aircraft to launch customer Qatar Airways.

The long-range aircraft is powered exclusively by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines designed and built in Derby.

Nearly 800 have already been ordered by airlines across the world since the design was launched eight years ago. Its main competitors are the Boeing 777 and 787. Airlines have ordered Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines for nearly 40% of 787s in Boeing's production backlog.

Other Midlands suppliers of technology systems for the Airbus A350 include UTC Aerospace Systems in Wolverhampton (actuation systems for the engine's thrust reversers) and Birmingham-based Controls and Data Services, now part of Rolls-Royce (electronic controls for the engines).
